B Braun Kenya, powers up sustainability with a new solar plant

B Braun Kenya has reinforced its commitment to sustainable manufacturing with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Solar Photovoltaic plant at its Athi River facility on March 20, 2025. This strategic investment underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability. Speaking during the inauguration, Managing Director Dr. Torsten Doenhoff highlighted the project as a testament to B. Braun’s commitment to eco-conscious innovation.

The 480 KW roof mounted solar plant collects solar energy with 1100 panels and will now generate 635 MWh of electricity annually, meeting 30% of the factory's power requirements. Seamlessly integrated with the National Grid and a Standby Generator, the system prioritizes Solar Energy for daytime operations. Beyond reducing dependency on conventional power sources, the plant is set to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 375 tons of CO₂ per year—the equivalent of 135,000 liters of diesel consumption. This initiative advances B. Braun’s global commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030, setting a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing.

The project is executed under a 10-year lease between B. Braun Pharmaceuticals EPZ Ltd and M/s Solarise Africa Ltd. As a leading player in the renewable energy space, Solarise will manage operations, and maintenance, ensuring B. Braun a reliable clean power supply.
